I purchased a 2010 Chevrolet Suburban black for my limousine business on January 3, 2010. The dealership said they would handle the registration for limousine plates and everything. I waited and about a month later when I called to see what was going on with my registration and plates, as the temp plate was about to expire, I was informed that they could not register the vehicle limousine. I asked why, they said because the vehicle has to have a license with the township that it will be parked in to register it as limousine. So I went to my township and got the license to park it and went back to them and gave them everything.
Also, I had explained that limousines in NJ are not supposed to pay taxes on the vehicle, it is an exemption for limos. The manager, Steve, reassured me and my wife that we would get back to the tax money of $1,900 and the registration fee of $184.50. I was pulled over several times because this process of "trying" to get the car registered limousine was taking too long. At one point, the police in Manhattan pulled me out of the car and frisked me. I am glad that I did not have my client in the car at the time of me getting pulled over because I would have lost my client on the spot, as she is my only one and I drive for her full time.
Finally, after going back and forth with the title clerk and manager of this dealership, with several emails, phone calls, and visits to the dealership, we were told that there was nothing they could do, that they had to register the vehicle as private. I decided to let them register the vehicle as private, as I could not afford to get pulled over again or get my license taken away, and decided to take it to consumer affairs. In the meantime, after I received the private plates and registration and went to the NJ DMV in Rahway, NJ. I registered the vehicle as limo with no problem, they didn't even ask me where I would register the vehicle or park it.
I have been registering my vehicles as limos for 3 years now and have never had this problem. This is negligence on the part of the dealership as they do not want to give us the tax or registration money back to us. Not only that, but they were extremely rude to my wife and I whenever we called or came in.
