I purchased a Nikon D300s camera on Dec. 21 as a Christmas surprise for my husband. I carefully asked every detail about the return policy, since I was not sure he would want that expensive camera. I asked about the terms, and was told he could return the camera for full refund within 7 days or store credit within 30 days. I repeatedly asked if he could have the money returned, and was told that would happen within the 7 day period and that the 7 day period would start on Christmas day, Dec. 25. On Dec. 31, my husband decided to keep the lens we purchased for $849 but return the camera for $1699. It was only THEN that we were told that there would be a 15% restocking fee. I explained that I repeatedly asked about the policy and that the restocking fee was never mentioned.

The "manager" was very rude and said that it was standard procedure in any electronics store. I pointed out that I was never told about the policy, and that it is NOT posted anywhere in the store. She said it was in fine print on the back of the receipt. I pointed out that it would only be seen there AFTER a purchase. We finally called the corporate office to explain the situation. They were helpful, and finally agreed to call the manager to authorize the refund. It appears that that particular store should have the restocking policy clearly posted. We usually make our electronics purchases at Costco, and have never faced this "standard policy" there. I would absolutely NEVER have purchased a product that expensive with a 15% return fee, unless I was absolutely sure I wanted it. A $254 restocking fee seems unreasonable, but especially so if it is not clearly posted in the store! I think that other consumers should be warned about this. Thank you!
