I had an appointment with Dr. ** on 4/22/10. I was told that a debit or credit card was needed for my files. Before I signed the agreement paper, I talked with Meghan. Meghan assured me over and over, that my debit card would not be used, if I made payment arrangements, and if I kept in contact with the office about my payments. I called the office in May to inquire about a $25.00 fee for each monthly statement being mailed out to me.
I was told that for every monthly statement sent out to me, there would be an additional $25.00 charge. I didn't like this, and I expressed my disappointment. I was not told about this additional charge, prior to receiving my 1st statement. I made arrangements to pay $50.00 a month, until the balance was paid. This arrangement was agreed upon by Dr. **'s office and myself. I made my 1st payment on 5/27/10. I called the office and spoke with Meghan. I let her know that the payment was in the mail. She said okay.
In June, I called Meghan and told her that I will be putting the June payment in the mail, on 7/1/10. I asked Meghan if I was still okay, as far as my card not being used. She said everything was okay. I spoke with Meghan on 8/12/10 to let her know, that I had put in the mail a check for $100.00. At that time, nothing was said to me about not accepting my check.
On 8/17/10 I received a note (on a plain white sheet of paper, no letter head), stating that my check was being returned to me. The balance on my account was charged to my debit card on 8/3/10. I was not notified that this transaction was going to occur. The balance of the account was not on the note, I was not given a receipt, and I was not given a confirmation number. On 8/23/10, I went to my bank, and closed out my account. I opened up a new account. On 8/24/10, I called Dr. **s office, and spoke with Meghan. I asked her why my debit card was used. She stated that per the office policy, the card was used. I stated to her that, we had an agreement that my card would not be used, if I made payment arrangements, and I stayed in contact with the office, per office policy. Both of which I had done.
When I asked how much money was charged to my account, Meghan quoted me $325.10. She said it was charged on 8/3/10. My bank statement showed a charge of $404.90 cleared on 8/6/10 from University Affiliated Physicians, Dr Patricia **'s office. I had to hold off on paying other bills because I didn't want any checks to bounce. I had to close out an account that I had for a long time, and open up another account.
