Agreed to a quote to have a new packaged heat pump installed on 10/19/2009. The quote covered "supply and install Amana 13 SEER 2.5 ton package heat pump(rectangular Unit), supply and install new all metal hard pipe duct and return air system, supply and install electrical wiring to unit, breakers in panel, outdoor power disconnect, unit poly pad, new thermosta wire and digital thermostat." Stating job will take 3 men two days. Asked about the type of freon in the new unit, Eric stated it would be R410a, it is not..is R22.
Company started work on 10/22/2009, removed my old unit which left me without any type of heat/air. Returned on 10/23/2009 to finish the job. Mid day I noticed in one of the ducts that they were hooking up the new duct to the old. Confronted the man on why, stated I would have to talk to Eric or Sean. Immediately called Eric, explained what was happening. He stated he would call back in a few minutes. Sean called back, stated they were behind and were temporarily hooking the duct up so I would have heat/air over the weekend.
Returned to finish on 10/26/2009. They left in the evining and immediately, Eric showed up to collect the money for the job. I pointed out that they did not wire the unit in outside as stated, but inside with my existing wire and breakers, he stated the breakers were too expensive for the outside box, and pointed out they had removed the knockouts in the outside box and needed to put covers on the spaces that were open. Was told they would be installed, then went to inside box, where they have removed all the screws and tried to put it back together with odd screws, was told they would replace. Then showed him the Cold air return, all it is, is a cover semi-attached to the three walls and a filter grill on the front, the inside is the old floor with openings, which are drawing all the return air from the house, which is filtered, and under the house, which is not filtered. Stated he would have them build an enclosed box to be installed.
Furter pointed out the holes in the wall in laundry room, insead of in the cubby where the return is, to support a two wire to the thermostat, for they used the old wire and it needed 6 wires instead of the four I had. The two wire is routed thru the water heater space, entwined in wire shelving in closet to the thermostat. Stated he would have it replaced with all new thermostat wire. Eric said he would call on 10/27/2009 to let me know when they would be out to fix the items.
Asked about extended warranty on the labor. Stated Amana had a special for $200. Had him add it by hand to the quote I have. Eric asked if I trusted him enough to pay for the job at that time. Wrote a check for $7200 at that time.
Over night, we noticed a reduction in our air flow from the unit. On inspection found that the new boots on the duct were not all the way installed and some were forced into the area and damaged severely, bent causing obstruction, none of the boots were attached to the floor and is a significant gap all around causing air to blow under the house in a crawl space, not in the house. Then on further inspection found that flex duct, not hard pipe is attached to the boots.
Still not hearing from Eric, I emailed him of the findings to add to the other items. No reply, called his cell, and he finally called back in the evening of the next day. Asked if he had gotten my email, he said no he had not been in the office yet. I started going over the items, he stopped me, stated Sean would be out on 10/29/2009, so I could show him what all was messed up. Sean never showed up, called or anything. I finally got outside to find they have also messed the underpinning on the base of the house, I have managed to fix some of it but do not have the strength to get the others. Then reading the install papers found out that there is suppose to be a drain attached to the unit for water drainage, states unit is not to be run without a drain with a trap. I have requested bill of sale and documentation on the money paid for the extended labor warranty which I have not received. Being a senior, I was making an investment in an efficient unit that would cost me less than my old unit to operate. Now I have a unit that will cost me more to opperate and still heating/cooling the outside.
