Hannahstown Mutual Insurance

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

Had notified our mortgage company in 2007 that we had changed insurance companies from Hannahstown to CA Casualty. Notified them not to send payment. I then called my insurance agent who works for Erie Insurance to cancel. In 2008 we received a renewal of our homeowners insurance through Hannahstown.

I then called my agent again at Erie. After going through our paperwork we discovered that we had 2 insurance policies for the year on our home. She told me no problem she will get it canceled and we will be issued a refund. We received a check for $50 something dollars. I called our agent at Erie Insurance who told me that was the refund amount that Hannahstown told them we would receive, not the $500 + dollars we overpaid for the year.

I called Hannahstown, I started to explain and Mary, I believe her name was, was just ignorant and cut me off. Read your documents she told me. I tried calling my agent again who told me there is nothing they can do. I called our new insurance company to see if that was policy for them as well, our agent told us he has never heard of that happening and it's not right.

I have had nowhere to turn and I don't feel that this is right. In the event of a claim I wonder if they would have claimed to be my insurance provider. Over $500 lost. Two premiums had to be paid that year.

About 3 or 4 weeks ago a large tree fell on my detached garage. It was a very healthy tree & fell due to it being on a steep hillside & the ground being soft due to a large amount of rain. I contacted my agent who had me call CMR (Claims Management Resources). This company does all the adjustment work for Hannahstown M. Ins. I guess. They treated me like I was being a bother to them from the start, I was told to hold off & wait. >>> I had a tree on top of my garage with obvious roof damage. The garage houses a custom, classic show truck & many thousands of dollars in equipment --- hello <<<.

She finally told me to call someone to remove the tree & take photos to send to her ---- Isnt this their job ???????? I took about 12 photos & sent to her & called Deans tree service to do the job. He said that he would deal directly with my insurance company as that was SOP in his business. He was told that I was covered for the removal of the tree & repairs to the garage minus $500.00 deductible per occurrence.

The tree was cut up & removed over the next 2 days @ a cost of $2,400.00. At this time it was discovered that there was extensive damage to the roof that was concealed by the tree. Also at this same time, I was told that I was covered for only $500.00 for the removal of the tree. But the roof would be covered, all this minus $500.00 of course.

Even the tree guy said that he never heard of such a thing, as there are times that heavy equipment such as cranes are needed. He said that INS. Companies allow $500.00 for the removal of the tree from the property but PAY WHATEVER IT TAKES TO REMOVE THE TREE FROM THE STRUCTURE.

While arguing with them, I called a roofer who cut me a huge break & repaired the roof for $1,350.00 or so ( cant remember exactly 1,350 or 1,390 or close). The insurance company sent me a check for the roofer minus my $500.00 deductible & asked me to have the tree guy send a new bill separating the costs of removing the tree from the structure & removing the tree from the property. He promptly did that showing $1,900.00 to remove the tree from the garage roof & 500.00 to remove the tree from the property.

The Ins. Co. then informed me that they would pay the $1,900.00 but the $500.00 to remove the tree from the property was not covered. What an about face this was, one minute its covered next minute it isnt. There would be no debris to remove if the tree hadnt fell on my roof in the first place, it's ALL PART OF THE SAME JOB. +++ During all this time, not one single person from that company bothered to come out to see whats going on, they put it all on my shoulders.

So, out of a claim totaling approximately $3,750.00 they paid only $2,750.00 & I get stuck with the need to pay the rest. Thats not why I have insurance, I have it so I don't need to pay.
