My 9 year old son has been suffering with debilitating migraines. Our Pediatrician wanted me to take him to a Pediatric Neurologist. I went to the HNE site looking for some to chose from. I found 2, neither were taking new patients and one had a 300 child waiting list. I called HNE and was told that to see a Pediatric Neurologist I would have to have my Primary fill out a Prior Authorization Form. I chose the Pediatric Neurology Department at Dartmouth/Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Lebanon, NH. His office filled one out and sent it in.
I called HNE the next day and was told that my request had been denied. I could see Ped Neuros at CT Children's Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, or Boston Children's Hospital. Neither of those facilities has Ped Neuros that specialize in children with Migraines. I feel that this Insurance makes big promises, but when it comes time to deliver they find any small print they can.
I will have to pay the out of pocket expenses to have my son see the Specialist that I want, or wait for them to get me in at a place that is booking in the summer to qualify for benefits.
