I originally stored my stuff with a company that was called American Self Storage. Their policy was to bill my credit card every month the charge of 350 per month, plus I had to put down a deposit of $350. I gladly paid it and every month I paid it from my credit card. Then in May I go to my storeage to check out a few items and to look at the storage because I was closing on my new house and I wanted to box up some items to make it neater for the movers.
I noticed that my storage bin was pad locked. I complained in the office and I was told I did not pay my bill. I said you charge my credit card automatically. I was then told that they don't use credit cards starting in May 2000 is when the new company took over. I then said fine this was May 21st a Sunday. I paid by check and checked my records to make sure and it was true there were no more bills on my credit card for storage.
While writing out the check I told the girl and the rest of the employees is there any procedure that I need to do because I am moving all my stuff out June 16th. I could not get an answer out of anyone.
On June 16th I came to move my stuff out and once again it was pad locked. I wrote out another check for 350 and told them I am moving out today I do not need the storage is there anything I need to do. I was once again told no. I asked about my deposit I was told it would be mailed to me. I removed all my stuff, took my padlock home with me and went on my way. About July 14th I recieve a call saying my bill is overdue. I said what do you mean I moved out. Dont you notice the room is empty.
I write a letter to the manager Rowland Brown. I tell him the story, he says, "Don't worry you will get your money back." I say fine. Now I get a registered letter saying they will auction my stuff off as of September 18, 2000 and I owe over 700 dollars in back rent. This is totally ridiculous and if you were to view their client list and find people on it they would all have similar complaints. What can you do about getting my deposit back or should I just go to Small Claims Court?
We vote for Small Claims Court.
