I ordered some renal diet pet food for my cat. RxPetFood.com refused to ship it unless my vet's office approved the order. My vet's office would not approve it for them, but told me that they would write me a prescription that I could fax to RxPetFood.com.
The majority of these diets contain no drugs. In the case of the renal diet for cats, it contains lower protein and phosphorous than retail food, as well as extra B Vitamins and Antioxidants. None of this classifies as drugs, medical devices, or any kind of controlled substance. I believe that requiring vet approval for these products is racketeering and I don't think it's legal.
