When we moved into our apartment, our rent was $495. That amount was later increased to $545. Ten months later, that amount was increased to $685. The manager claimed that $685 was a discount amount of what NEW apartment dwellers were now paying. We did NOT agree with this amount. We thought it was excessive. She agreed and lowered the amount back down to $660 as of October 1, 2000.
I feel since she made a mistake in the amount she increased it to, we had a right to disagree. She claimed that apartments comparable to ours in the area were going for $710. Right across the street from us is an apartment for rent going for only $535 and it has two bedroom/ 2 bath, whereas ours only has one bathroom and one vanity with only cold running water.
I want to know where these management corporations get their rental figures from. Since I know that a new tenant moving in would only pay what I started out paying which is $495 or less.
Carmen needs to carefully read her lease, which should outline what the rental fee is. She can also contact her local consumer affairs office for assistance.
