On October 25, 2002, while vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, we awoke to the sounds of high winds. We were concerned when we looked out the window and saw the dark skies, waves reaching the 3rd floors of the rooms on the beach, and trees bending in half with the wind. So we went to the butlers room to see what we should do. We were told there was nothing to worry about. However, we stayed in the 'Butlers' area for a while.
Shortly after that, we were told to go down to the 19th floor for our safety. All of the guests of the upper floors gathered on the 19th floor, wondering what would happen next. Within a few minutes I fell on the marble floors in the hallway. Not knowing the seriousness of the fall, I tried to get up. I needed help...my friend helped me up and walked me to the bench in the hallway. I could not put weight on my leg without extreme pain. I sat there for about 30 minutes, waiting for someone from the hotel to help us. When some employees from the hotel came, I told them I needed a doctor, and they said they would be right back.
We waited. Other employees of the hotel came, and left....each time telling me they would be right back with help. 5 hours later, after all of the other hotel guests had gone to lower floors, I was still on the 19th floor waiting for assistance! When the storm had subsided, a maid from the hotel finally came by offering me a sandwich. She saw I needed help, and telephoned for a doctor. Within 5 minutes a doctor arrived, checked my condition, and telephoned for a ambulance.
In the emergency room, x-rays were taken and found that my hip was broken and required immediate attention. If not opperated on immediately, I would lose the use of my leg permanently. Because we were in a foreign country, my health insurance (Blue Cross and Blue Shield) was not honored. The operation and hospital bills had to be paid up front. I was unable to work for 6 1/2 months because of this injury, losing over $30,000 in income. I then lost my job because I was unable to return to work in a timely manner.
The operation has not healed correctly, and I now walk with a permanent limp. I have spent thousands of dollars on hospital bills, doctors follow-up care, therapy, and medications. All as a result of the neglegence of the Sheraton in keeping their guests safe. I have contacted the Sheraton with my complaint, and still, 1 year later, have not been successful in getting any answers or help in my situation.
Linda should immediately contact the best-known, most aggressive personal injury lawyer in Albuquerque. Her injuries are serious and her losses too great for her to represent herself.
